those of you critical of the fact Justin rose
was not exempt into the u.s. open, prepare
to raise your voices again: the memorial
champ is also not in the field for the british
open at st. andrews. rose moved to 33th
on the world ranking after his win in ohio,
but just as it was too late for him to get into
pebble beach off the climb into the top 50
on the world ranking, it was also too late
for him to get into the year’s third major.
like the usga, the r&a takes the top 50
players on the ranking published after the
hp byron nelson championship, clearly a
nod to making players qualify for the year’s
middle two majors—it is, after all, what
makes the two championships open in
more than just word, but in deed. but all is
not lost for rose, who also missed the open
at st. andrews in 2000 and 2005. in his final chance to make the field, rose needs to
finish in the top two on a money list of earnings made in six pga tour events culminating with this week’s at&t national. rose
and travelers championship winner bubba
watson are currently one-two on that list.
