golf doesn’t always lend
itself to happy endings,
which is why recent stan-
ford graduate Joseph
bramlett is thankful for
whatever comes his way.
after qualifying for the
u.s. open at pebble beach
(where he played a practice
round with tiger woods),
the 22-year-old from sara-
toga, calif., claimed his first
significant amateur title at
last weekend’s northeast
amateur, winning by two
strokes. bramlett, son of
a black father and white
mother, has been consid-
ered an up-and-comer ever
since becoming the young-
est player to qualify for the
u.s. amateur at age 14 in
2002. his promising future,
however, got waylaid by
two separate injuries to his
right wrist that lingered for
more than two years. a so-
so return in his final semes-
ter with the cardinal this
spring didn’t discourage
bramlett, who is ultimately
eyeing pga tour q school
in the fall. “i felt my game
was still there,” bramlett
says. “it’s just a matter of
finding it.”
