usga // u.s. women’s amateur
public links championship
tubert takes crown
 winner emily tubert
does not start college for
another few months, but
she will already be a national champion when she
gets to arkansas. in the final
of the u.s. women’s amateur public links championship, the 18-year-old from
burbank, calif., knocked off
usc transfer lisa mccloskey, 3 and 2, at the warren
gc at notre dame (ind.)
young but long
tubert has only played golf
for five years and had never
advanced to match play in a
usga event. any lack of experience was offset by her
270-yard driving average.
finding herself 40 yards
behind tubert off the tee for
much of the day, mccloskey
called tubert “the longest
player i’ve ever played with.”
lucky seven mccloskey, who holds the ncaa
54-hole scoring record, had
a 2-up lead after five holes
before tubert took control
of the match. starting with
a chip in birdie on no. 6,
tubert won seven straight
holes (the next two with
pars followed by four more
birdies) to take a lead she
would not relinquish.
on the move kimberly
kim, 18, said she will play in
the u.s. women’s open at
oakmont cc as a professional. kim’s impressive
amateur career included
being the youngest player
to win the u.s. women’s
amateur (age 14 in 2006),
a two-time runner-up at the
wapl and two-time member of the victorious u.s.
curtis cup team.
