debuts titleist’s new 910 series of drivers was added
to the usga’s driver list June 21 and (along with 910
fairway woods and hybrids) will be brought out on tour at
this week’s at&t national at aronimink gc. the drivers
will come in d2 and d3 models (word is the d2 is slightly
more user-friendly). both feature a fitting adapter called
“surefit” that allows for the use of interchangeable shafts
from a titleist-authorized fitter.
gamechanger the week prior
to the lpga state farm classic,
cristie kerr tried about 15 putters,
“just looking for the feel.” the one
that felt right was a 33½-inch odyssey marxman kerr picked up at
liberty national gc in new Jersey.
kerr used it to win the state farm,
then backed it up with a victory at
the lpga championship yesterday.
“it’s a feel where your head becomes
more steady, the pace of the stroke
becomes more even. you hit the
same putt over and over,” said kerr.
good fit in this era of high-tech
fitting and players seeking to get
every club dialed in to perfection,
it was refreshing to hear how u.s.
open champ graeme mcdowell
came to put callaway’s ft- 3 driver
in his bag. mcdowell took the club
to leatherhead gc in surrey, england, hit balls on the range and then
went to the club’s fourth hole to hit
some tee shots into the wind. after
hitting about 30 balls, mcdowell
was satisfied—and the club went in
play.
equipment
tried and true steps
gone but not forgotten
it’s tough enough for a small equipment company to get clubs used on
the pga tour but even more difficult after a company has gone out
of business. at the travelers championship, however, three players—
brad adamonis, James driscoll and
Jeff quinney—used nickent hybrids
even though nickent closed its
doors last year. the three are grads
of the nationwide tour, where the
defunct company made a major
push when it was still operational.
insider steve flesch pulled double duty at the travelers event near
hartford, conn. in addition to playing
in the tournament (he missed the
cut), flesch was in cleveland’s tour
van wednesday building a backup
set of irons—performing most of the
work himself. “i’m in here way too
much,” said flesch after taking less
than an hour to complete the set.
during that time, flesch’s son, griffin, also got some equipment work
done, leaving with a pair of junior-length cleveland wedges.
