cristie kerr 01
cristie kerr’s 12-stroke victory in the lpga
championship casts her career in a whole
new light. the player not easily embraced
because of her sometimes prickly personality is projected to become the first american to be no. 1 in the rolex rankings and
takes a big step toward becoming the first
u.s.–born player since beth daniel in 1994
to be the tour’s player of the year. kerr’s
winning margin was among the best ever
in a major. betsy king won the 1992 lpga
championship by 11 strokes and louise
suggs won the 1949 u.s. women’s open
by 14 strokes. tiger woods took the 2000
u.s. open by 15 strokes. kerr’s dominating
effort also makes her a serious candidate
for the lpga hall of fame, one of the most
difficult in all of sports to gain entry. of
active players, laura davies has 25 of the
27 points needed, and meg mallon has
22. next comes kerr with 16. every victory,
player of the year or Vare trophy award is
worth one point and each major two. kerr,
32, is peaking at the right time. she won
the state farm two weeks ago, and with the
u.s. women’s open and the ricoh women’s british open upcoming in the next five
weeks, this could be a huge hall-of-fame
points year for kerr.
