evian
masters
there was a brouhaha when the kraft
nabisco championship, which became an
lpga major in 1983, dropped the words
“dinah shore” from its title. now there is a
move afoot that could cost the knc its major
status. the evian masters—and its $3 million
purse—is lobbying hard to become a major.
to do that, a scheduling issue would need
to be resolved: the evian would have to be
moved to earlier in the year, away from the
ricoh women’s british open, which follows
it the last week in July. and if evian is moved,
a couple of european events may have to
be added to the lpga schedule so players
don’t go all the way to europe to play just
one tournament two times a year. (given the
lightness of the lpga schedule, that might
not be a bad thing.) but evian’s push to gain
major status could mean replacing an existing major, and the obvious candidate is the
knc (which, fine an event as it is, doesn’t
have the caché of the u.s. women’s open,
lpga championship or women’s british).
unless the lpga decides to buck tradition
and go to five majors. we hear a decision will
be made in october.
