08u.s. women’s amateur
for the first time since
2006, the 156-player field
at the u.s. women’s amateur doesn’t include a past
champion: last year’s winner Jennifer song and 2006
champion kimberly kim
have turned pro (as have
2009 runner-up Jennifer
Johnson and teen phenom
alexis thompson). while
there is no clear favorite to
take this year’s title at char-
lotte (n.c.) cc, recent his-
tory offers a profile for who
might be victorious. the av-
erage age of the last 15 win-
ners has been all of 19.06,
giving u.s. women’s ama-
teur public links runner-up
lisa mccloskey (right), who
turned 19 this past weekend,
reason to smile. interest-
ingly, the average age of the
entire field this week is just
19.98, with only seven mid-
amateurs competing. if the
older generation has a stan-
dard bearer, it is 32-year-old
meghan stasi, a two-time
usga winner (the 2006
and 2007 women’s mid-
amateurs) who reached
the semifinals of the british
women’s amateur in June
and recently won the flor-
ida amateur. most likely,
though, the competition in
north carolina will highlight
again the fact that these
days women’s amateur golf
is truly child’s play.
