he weighs only 160 pounds and says he’s 5-foot-
9, although we’d like to get confirmation from
the tape measure. regardless, david chung
isn’t the most intimidating individual you’ll
find on a golf course. yet in a matter of 11 days,
the 20-year-old stanford junior has become
the biggest, baddest amateur in the country,
winning two of the summer circuit’s premier
events, the porter cup and the western amateur, in consecutive weeks. the latter triumph
came saturday at skokie (ill.) cc, when chung
knocked off ucla’s gregor main, 2 and 1, in the
championship match. comebacks seem to be
chung’s specialty; the fayetteville, n.c., native
was four off the lead early at the porter cup in
the final round before closing with a 65 to win
by three. against main, chung was 2 down after
five holes but rallied with six birdies over his
next 10 to claim the third major amateur title of
his career (he won the north & south in 2009).
maybe it’s the belly putter chung uses that
lulls opponents to sleep. whatever the reason,
chung has spiced up an otherwise pedestrian
summer season with the u.s. amateur at washington’s chambers bay only two weeks away.
