01tiger’stroubles
for 15 years we have watched tiger woods post
some remarkable numbers: winning the 1997
masters by 12 and the 2000 u.s. open by 15 immediately come to mind, as does woods playing
66 pga tour events from the 1999 pga championship to the 2003 masters and finishing over par in
only one of them (he was three over at the 2001 u.s.
open). but now the player who has been no. 1 on the
world ranking for 612 weeks in his career—including
the last 270—is recording staggering numbers of a
different nature. his 18-over-par score at the wgc-bridgestone invitational was woods’ worst 72-hole
performance in relation to par as a professional by
six strokes. but perhaps most worrisome for woods
(and his fans) is that the bridgestone was played at
firestone cc’s south course—a layout where woods
has been nothing short of invincible, winning seven
times (including four of the last five). although
woods’ fairways hit figure of 39.3 percent doesn’t
bode well for this coming week at whistling straits
where accuracy is at a premium, the larger concern
is that woods’ woeful performance at firestone may
indicate that 2010 is indeed going to be a lost season.
