phil mickelson
it has been feast or famine in 2010 for masters champion phil mickelson. aside from winning the green jacket, lefty has only four top-10s
in 15 events. mickelson didn’t need to win sunday’s wgc-bridgestone
invitational to score a victory of sorts—finally usurping tiger woods as
no. 1 in the world ranking—but the disappointing thing is that mickelson didn’t come close. starting the final round t- 10, only four shots off
the lead, with woods already in at a fat 18 over, mickelson only needed
to finish fourth at firestone to become no. 1 for the first time. instead,
02
he ballooned to a 78 and finished t-46. with woods and mickelson
struggling, and world no. 3 lee westwood now shelved indefinitely
because of a calf injury, who really deserves to be no. 1? if it were professional boxing, the heavyweight title might be vacant. but mickelson,
for whom a streaky game has been the hallmark of his career, could just
as easily turn things around this week in the pga championship. first,
he’ll need to forget a wasted opportunity in akron and try to channel his
fantastic finish at augusta.
