bernhard langer
for months many in the golf media have been speculating
about a senior golfer playing for corey pavin’s u.s. ryder
cup team (tom watson, fred couples and pavin himself
have been mentioned), but it could be the european team
that boasts a champions tour player. euro skipper colin
montgomerie surprised many when he said he would consider two-time senior major champ bernhard langer as a
captain’s pick. langer may not be the best player available to
monty, but right now the winner of the british and u.s. senior opens is one of the hottest. and if padraig harrington,
paul casey or Justin rose (his obvious choices) can make
the team on merit after this week’s pga championship,
langer just might be montgomerie’s best alternate wild-card selection. consider the candidates: former players
championship winners henrik stenson and sergio garcia
aren’t anywhere near ryder cup form, and edoardo moli-nari, alvaro quiros and ross mcgowan have no cup experience. “it wouldn’t be an out-of-the-blue pick,” said montgomerie. “i know through personal experience he’s as good
a partner as you could ever have.” and with lee westwood’s
calf injury making him questionable for cup play, langer just
may be the best decision monty can make.
