USGA // U.S. AMATEUR
A big birthday present
 WINNER Peter Uihlein
celebrated his 21st birthday
Sunday afternoon at Chambers Bay at University Place,
Wash., by giving himself
“the best present of my life,”
making eight birdies and
two eagles during Sunday’s
36-hole championship
match to claim the U.S.
Amateur title over David
Chung, 4 and 2.
HOME AWAY FROM
HOME It was another successful trip to the Pacific
Northwest for Uihlein. Last
fall, he won the Ping/Golf-week Invitational at Gold
Mountain GC in nearby
Bremerton, Wash., and in
July he claimed the Sahalee
Players Championship at
The Home Course.
 TURNING POINT Uihlein,
an Oklahoma State junior,
never trailed against Chung,
holding a 2-up advantage
through the morning 18
after chipping in for an eagle
on the home hole. Uihlein
stretched the lead to 4 up
through 26 holes, but saw
Chung win the 28th and
29th holes to make things
interesting. On the 32nd
hole, however, Uihlein rolled
in a 25-foot birdie putt to
go 3 up and dash Chung’s
comeback hopes.
FAST AND FIRM Cham-
bers Bay, site of the 2015
U.S. Open, held its own as
it hosted its first national
championship, drawing
crowds of 33,000 for the
week. The Robert Trent Jones
Jr., course played to a 79.247
overall average during stroke
play (73.78 for players who
advanced to match play)
with nine of the 312 play-
ers breaking par. “We were
thrilled with the golf course,”
said USGA president Jim
Hyler. “I think it proved to be
a true championship test.”
