10golf channel’s future
last week, golf channel president page thompson (above) announced
to his staff that he was stepping down, effective at the end of the year.
how to interpret this move? first, that thompson is well thought of at
comcast, golf channel’s parent company. a gc source told Golf World
that thompson is returning to comcast headquarters in philadelphia
and “a bigger job in the corporation.” second, and of greater interest to
golf channel viewers, it probably means nbc’s takeover of the golf-only
cable channel is coming. to review: comcast and nbc universal will
complete their merger in a few months, and when they do, nbc sports
and olympics chairman dick ebersol is expected to oversee some of
comcast’s sports properties, including golf channel. that doesn’t
necessarily mean you’ll see Johnny miller replace nick faldo on gc’s
thursday-friday pga tour telecasts. but it does mean ebersol will have
a say in thompson’s successor.
