winner after three
straight 66s, heath slocum
shot a closing 68 on sea
island gc’s seaside course to
earn a one-stroke victory over
bill haas at the inaugural
mcgladrey classic. it was the
fourth pga tour title for the
36-year-old and his first since
taking the barclays during
the 2009 fedex cup playoffs.
key hole slocum had four
birdies over his first eight holes
sunday, but bogeys on nos. 9
and 12 dropped him into a
three-way tie for the lead. on
the par- 4 16th, he rattled in a
60-foot birdie putt from off
the green—his ball hitting the
flag stick before falling in the
hole—that put him ahead for
good. “i’m not looking to try to
make 3 there,” slocum admit-
ted. “i was doing whatever i
could to just two-putt.”

noteworthy the fall
series win doesn’t get slocum
a spot in the 2010 masters,
but the $720,000 first-place
check moves him to no. 29
on the tour money list with
the top 30 securing invita-
tions to augusta national.
similarly, after haas won the
viking classic the previous
week, his second-place finish
jumped him to no. 18. … matt
kuchar’s final-round 68 gave
him a seven-under 273, good
for a t-25 and likely wrapping
up the vardon trophy for
lowest adjusted scoring
average (69.57).

without a win going [into the fall series].
