04senior players championship
under beautiful skies, with a dramatic finish (a playoff victory by mark o’meara over
michael allen) on a nicely renovated tpc potomac at avenel farm, the constellation
energy senior players championship had a lot going for it. the only problem for one of
the champions tour’s oldest events (begun in 1983) is the spot on the calendar: in the
fall when golf isn’t the focus for a lot of folks. the major championship will return under
constellation energy’s sponsorship to baltimore cc’s five farms east course in 2011.
after that its future isn’t clear. “constellation energy has been an unbelievable sponsor,
and hopefully they’ll sign up again,” said Jay haas. “i think there is talk of rotating the
event around.” one possibility that intrigues tour players is a return to tpc sawgrass,
where the tournament was held in 1988 and 1989, with the event played more in peak
golf season. “i always thought it would be nice to see it played in ponte vedra,” said lo-
ren roberts, echoing haas’ sentiment. “they probably wouldn’t want to put us on the
stadium course—they’d probably put us on the [valley] course. but i think it would be
a great thing to do.” the champions tour solved one major conundrum when it shifted
the tradition from august to early may for 2011. a move that puts the senior players in
a better slot would be another good one for the veteran circuit as well.
