gamechanger: ben crane came to the final hole of
the cimb asia pacific classic needing a birdie to win and
got it with an approach shot to eight feet that set up the
clinching putt. although some may argue crane’s titleist
909 d2 driver (which helped set up an eagle on the 15th
hole) or odyssey’s white hot 5 putter (which made the
winning putt) were his most-crucial clubs in malaysia,
it was crane’s titleist ap2 irons (shown) that produced
more big shots during his second win this year.
changes: ernie els used callaway’s new diablo octane tour driver
at the grand slam of golf after the
company’s tour reps built him several
versions to test a week earlier. els
also added the company’s slate Jaws
wedges. els kept the clubs in his bag
for the cimb asia pacific classic,
where he was t- 5. … the nationwide
tour championship is not usually the
place to make changes, but Joe affrunti and hunter haas put titleist’s
new prototype pro v1x in play, finishing third and t- 5, respectively.
company man?: ryan moore
may own a piece of scratch
golf—he finished t- 3 and t- 9 in
the bmw championship and the
tour championship using scratch
irons—but that didn’t prevent him
from using ping s56 irons in malaysia. moore (who used ping irons
in college and in his early years on
tour) didn’t miss a beat with the
new clubs, finishing t- 5.
golf-patents.com. david dawsey’s
website includes a recent post about
a nike patent application for a “golf
club head or other ball striking device having stiffened face portion.”
the invention has “one or more
stiffening elements or other structures contacting an inner surface of
the face, to provide locally increased
stiffness to particular areas of the
face. … the stiffening element includes a chamber adapted to contain a viscous substance. the viscous substance can be selected and

on the drawing board: few
things are more fun than visiting
inserted into the chamber to create
regions of increased stiffness in de-
sired locations, leaving other regions
of the face to have increased flex-
ibility as compared to the stiffened
regions.” what does this mean?
well, if you tend to hit the ball on the
heel area, the club would allow you
to make an adjustment there so that
the heel would have more springlike
effect than other areas of the club.
similarly, if you hit it high, low or
on the toe, you’d make those areas
more springy.
