world ranking
congratulations to lee westwood for unseating tiger woods atop the world ranking. if we have a word of advice for the englishman, it would be to not get too comfortable on the throne as his stay there is likely going to be a short one. idled by a
calf injury but expected to play this week in china, westwood will be challenged by
woods, martin kaymer and phil mickelson, who all can replace him with a victory
at this week’s showdown for the crown at the wgc-hsbc champions. and with
woods playing the following week in australia, the european tour players concluding their race to dubai with the dubai world championship later in november and
01
top-notch silly-season events including woods’ chevron world challenge in december, we could have a rotation of sorts, like the one seen on the lpga this summer
when several stars took turns playing the role of the world’s best golfer. after woods’
five-year reign, this potential volatility is welcome. it wouldn’t be good if the game
of musical chairs extended past 2011, but for the next few months, this latest fallout
from the woods scandal—most would agree that for 2010 there hasn’t been a true
no. 1 golfer—is a plus. although we may not be sure, week-to-week, of the identity of
the world’s best golfer, we appreciate the potential for debates.—John Antonini
