04pga tour schedule
while there will be those who will look at the glass as half empty—some
people like to see the pga tour stub its toe—the fact is the 2011 schedule,
when it is released, will contain more good news than bad. on the bad side,
there will be one fewer event (the turning stone resort championship) and
two tournaments (the bob hope classic and the heritage classic) will be
run without sponsors. the good news is the tour has enough money in its
war chest to float two events and that the loss of only one tournament in a
still-recovering economy shows the overall strength of professional golf. the
reno-tahoe open is without a sponsor, but that has been the case for the
event opposite the british open for most of its existence. and sources say
a deal is close for the st. Jude classic in memphis to pick up sponsorship
help. the tour can’t keep subsidizing events forever, but the economy won’t
languish forever, either. bottom line: the pga tour has weathered a brutal
economic storm rather well.—R.S.
