debuts callaway has unveiled a pair of new balls—the
three-piece hX diablo tour and two-piece hX diablo. the
tour version features a core with a soft center that gets gradually firmer toward the perimeter, for less spin off the driver
and more spin on short irons. the cover is made from a soft
ionomer. the hX diablo is a low-compression distance ball
with a firmer ionomer cover. both balls feature the company’s
heX dimple pattern designed to reduce drag. the hX diablo
tour sells for $26 a dozen, while the hX diablo is $20 a dozen.
in the Pink … again paula
creamer was up to her old tricks,
using a pink-colored golf ball sunday at the lpga’s founders cup
event. unlike in the past, however,
creamer isn’t using a precept-brand
ball, instead changing to a bridge-stone b330-rX—a ball designed
specifically for swing speeds less
than 105 miles per hour. creamer
finished t- 2 at the founders, shooting 66 sunday. unfortunately, for
everyday golfers, the pink-colored
b330-rX is not available at retail.
heavy lifting although most
tour pros have been gravitating
toward lighter driver shafts (
including some using shafts weighing
less than 50 grams), sergio garcia
bucks that trend. the spaniard got
his 2011 pga tour season off to a
promising start with a t- 15 at the
transitions championship using
mitsubishi diamana shafts in his
taylormade r11 driver and taylormade burner superfast 2.0 fairway woods weighing a beefy 103
grams—the heaviest in the field.
on the radar although clubs
from large equipment companies
make up the majority of what is
in play on the pga tour, once in
a while a lesser-known company
makes inroads. that’s the case with
fourteen golf. at the transitions,
rocco mediate had a pair of the
company’s sf-206 fairway woods
in the bag, and fourteen recently
signed arjun atwal and chad
collins to its staff. matt kuchar
also uses a fourteen hybrid and
62-degree wedge.
club quirk one of the issues
some european players deal with
when they play in the united states
is the conversion of distance from
meters to yards. alex cejka, who
finished t-57 at innisbrook’s copperhead course, is one such player,
but he came up with a unique
solution: he had the yardage he
hits each of his callaway X-forged
wedges stamped on the back of the
clubs. To see Cejka explain this and
other aspects of his bag, click here
for the video.
