can tom lehman keep winning? tom lehman has been the class of the champions tour so far in 2011, winning three of the first eight tournaments, including the year’s first major championship, the regions tradition. if lehman, who has stepped up with bernhard langer sidelined by injury and fred couples hobbled by his back, could successfully defend at this week’s senior pga championship at Valhalla gc in louisville (he won last year at colorado gc), it would reinforce his senior superiority and set up an intriguing sum- mer of “senior slam” talk. hale irwin edged Jay haas by one stroke when the senior pga was last contested at Valhalla in 2004, when irwin’s fourth win in the champi- onship (second only to sam snead’s six triumphs) shared headlines with a week of terrible weather that produced seven inches of rain, nearby tornadoes and forced a monday conclusion. unfortunately this week’s louisville forecast isn’t looking good, either, with at least a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms through saturday. it will be a shame if weather turns out to be a big story this week because the senior pga is the oldest event in senior golf, and players covet the chance to get heir name on the huge alfred s. bourne trophy. —Bill Fields 10
