augusta state repeats as ncaa champs
ncaa // division i Men’s chaMPionshiP
winner augusta state
became the first men’s pro-
gram to win back-to-back
ncaa titles since houston
in 1984-85 when the Jag-
uars knocked off georgia,
3-2, in the championship
match at karsten creek
gc. Junior patrick reed
improved his ncaa match-
play record to 6-0 when he
defeated harris english, 2
and 1, securing asu’s title-
clinching point after carter
newman and mitch kry-
wulycz won their matches
earlier in the afternoon.
“playing georgia tech, okla-
homa state and georgia [in
match play], you can’t get
three bigger teams,” said
newman. “and you couldn’t
get three teams that wanted
to beat us more.”
fond farewell it was
the final college start for all
five asu golfers—newman,
krywulycz, olle bengtsson
and henrik norlander are
seniors and reed is turning
pro. as it turned out, it was
also the last tournament for
Josh gregory as augusta
state’s coach. the 36-year-
old announced he would be
taking the vacant men’s job
at smu, his alma mater. “i
always said it would take an
unbelievable opportunity to
get me to leave augusta,”
gregory said. “but it’s a
dream opportunity to go
back home.”
