leaving the Stanwich club in Greenwich, conn.,
Saturday afternoon, Patrick cantlay looked no worse
for wear, which is saying something given all that had
transpired the previous week. Six days earlier, the
Ucla freshman was in columbus, ohio, to receive
the Jack nicklaus award from the Golden bear himself as college golf’s top d-I player. the next day he
finished t- 4 at a sectional qualifier in columbus to
earn a spot in the U.S. open. from there he traveled
to connecticut, where he played in the Palmer cup,
winning a final-round singles match to help a team of
U.S. collegians rally to beat its european counterparts,
13-11. while in the nutmeg State, he also learned of
his sponsor’s exemption into this month’s travelers
championship outside hartford. “oh, and I had two
finals to take,” said cantlay, who faxed answers to his
science and history exams back to school between
rounds. “So yeah, it’s been a little crazy. but it’s been
a great few weeks too.” the way the 19-year-old from
los alamitos, calif., is playing, the next few weeks
could be equally exciting. cantlay’s methodical ball
striking and impressive short game—not to mention
his unflappable on-course demeanor—make him a
smart pick to claim low amateur honors at congressional. confidence built there will certainly serve him
well the following week at the travelers. only one
thing right now could seemingly hold cantlay back:
fatigue. —Ryan Herrington
