 winner harrison frazar,
39, who had made 355 PGa
tour starts without winning (the sixth most among
active players), ended that
streak when he parred the
third playoff hole (the par- 4
12th at tPc Southwind) to
defeat robert karlsson, who
missed his par putt, at the
fedex St. Jude classic.
frazar file frazar’s win
provided relief to a veteran
who was playing on a major medical extension after
undergoing hip and shoulder
surgery in 2010. frazar has
been outside the top 100 on
the money list since 2006.
his last win had been the
1997 South carolina classic
on the nationwide tour.
faMiliar feeling It
was the second straight year
karlsson lost in sudden death
in memphis. In 2010 he and
lee westwood were headed
for a t- 2 finish until robert
Garrigus, three ahead on the
72nd tee, made a disastrous
triple-bogey 7. the trio went
to a playoff, which westwood won.
open date frazar’s
victory was good news
for zach byrd. frazar was
already in the field for this
week’s U.S. open, so the
spot reserved for the champion in memphis (had he
been not otherwise eligible)
went to byrd, the first alternate from the Summit, n.J.,
sectional qualifier.
