debuts Ping is predictable in its product introductions,
rotating its G series of woods and irons every two years.
as such, the next iteration, the G20, was due to hit the tour
and this week it did, with three players—lee westwood,
kirk triplett and d.J. brigman—putting the all-titanium club
in play. although Ping resisted jumping into the adjustabil-ity arena, the club boasts a high-balance-point shaft designed to redistribute mass into the clubhead while maintaining the same overall weight and swingweight.

adams’ new driver, streelman’s irons, slocum’s putter
need for speed adams will
release its Speedline 9088 Ul driver
in august, but details are already out.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect
of the lightweight club (290 grams)
is a high-balance-point, 45-gram
matrix shaft, which brings the mass
up toward the grip, providing a lighter
club with lower inertia about the grip.
adams says players—especially
those needing more speed—hit this
club straighter than ultra superlight
builds since they don’t have to put as
much effort into releasing the club.
Changes kevin Streelman
switched to a set of wilson’s yet-to-be-released Staff fG v2 irons
at the fedex St. Jude classic. the
clubs are a cavity-back players iron
with extra mass positioned behind
the impact area. … Sergio Garcia is
known to have a penchant for heavy
shafts in his woods, but in memphis
Garcia used aldila’s rIP beta 90
shaft in his driver. Garcia had used
the shaft during his successful U.S.
open sectional qualifier.

Slocum changing putters (to a Ping
anser milled Series #6, from a
heel-shafted original anser2 style
head with a “zing”-style hosel)
wouldn’t be all that noteworthy
unless he won the event. but word
is that Slocum changed flat sticks
after a session using Ping’s soon-to-be-released putting app that
helps players determine the putter
that is right for their stroke.
grinding away taylormade
has developed a new wedge grind
for its tP xft wedges. the grind is
in the prototype stage with details
unknown, but Garrett willis put the
new grind to the test prior to the
fedex St. Jude classic, hitting an array of shots on the short-game area
at tPc Southwind. willis, who has
used Ping wedges for years, asked
for his preferred grip and took a set
home for further testing.
