what to make of the golf boys, the new venture by ben crane, hunter mahan,
bubba watson and rickie fowler that premiered its music video, “Oh, Oh, Oh,”
Tuesday night? put it this way: if the pga tour doesn’t work out, then… well, let’s
really hope it doesn’t come to that. no, it’s fair to say the group’s not going to be
entertaining recording-contract offers anytime soon, and already a quiet cho-
rus of critics has implied that the foursome’s lighthearted efforts—all proceeds
from the sale of the song on itunes will go to charity—underscore how ameri-
can golfers are preoccupied with everything except winning tournaments. but
05boys;Just;want;to;have;fun
that’s missing the point. for one thing, watson has won twice this year and three
times in the last 12 months. and for another, the video offers a needed response
to the premise that the european golfers atop the world ranking are the only
ones having fun these days. in the absence of tiger woods, golf needs person-
alities that fans gravitate toward for more than just their short games. perhaps
you could do without the sight of watson in his overalls or crane in a helmet
and a unitard. but one thing’s for sure: you’re not going to forget it anytime soon,
either.—Sam Weinman
