�debuts titleist is known for bringing equipment to the
tour prior to release as part of its “validation” process and
is holding to that strategy with the new 712 iron line. the
clubs—new mbs, cbs, ap1s and ap2s (shown)—will be
out on tour for the first time at the at&t national. visually, the mbs and cbs are not a big departure from previous
iterations, but the ap1 and ap2s have revamped cavity designs. geoff ogilvy said at the u.s. open that he expects to
put one of the new models in play this week at aronimink.
bubba’s driver, ping’s putter app, rocco’s artwork
�changes ping’s g20 driver
continues to see converts, the latest
being bubba watson at the travelers
championship. watson normally
uses a 7.5-degree head but the g20
he played with had an 8.5-degree
head that measures 8 degrees and
shimmed (material added in the
hosel that alters face angle) slightly
open. watson had a ball speed of
190 mph during testing of the club
on the launch monitor, prompting
him to put it in play. at hartford
he averaged 307.5 yards off the
tee, ranking second. … splitting the
difference between a hybrid and a
5-wood, ryan moore added adams
golf’s idea black super hybrid ( 17
degrees) to his set. the club features
a larger head and longer shaft than a
conventional hybrid, but is not quite
a fairway wood. … lucas glover
ditched the nike sumo2 square
driver he used to win the 2009 u.s.
open for a nike vr prototype driver
at tpc river highlands. glover also
switched his fairway woods, adding
a vr pro 3- and 5-wood.
�van insider the iping putter
app received quite a workout at
tpc river highlands with 25 play-
ers doing multiple sessions accord-
ing to matt rollins, pga tour rep
for ping. the app tells players what
type of stroke path they have as
well as providing a “putting handi-
cap” for consistency of the stroke.
“garrett willis asked me every
day if anyone beat him, and when
someone did, he asked if he could
have another chance to beat the
‘low handicapper,’ ” said rollins.
�personal touch rocco medi-
ate withdrew from the travelers, but
not before showing off a specially
made scotty cameron by titleist
009 putter that features markings
comprising every icon he has ever put
on a putter (including a sham-
rock, a horseshoe and a dollar
sign). the putter required
eight paints, but mediate
said it took less than 20 min-
utes to get
the icons
filled in.
