07tiger starts his comeback tiger woods is finally returning to competition. the beleaguered former no. 1, who has been sidelined with in- juries to his left knee and achilles since playing nine desultory holes at the players in may, announced last week that he would play in both this week’s wgc-bridgestone invitational at firestone (where he has won seven times in his career) and next week’s pga championship, the season’s final major championship, at atlanta ac. the question on most people’s minds is: how much golf will woods—now 27th in the world ranking—have un- der his belt when he gets to akron? woods began hitting balls last tuesday and had practice sessions with sean foley, his swing instructor, thursday and friday (debunking speculation that woods is looking for a new coach as well as a permanent caddie). their work was cut short thursday by a thunderstorm, but tiger played a quick 18 holes friday morning, riding a cart, at medalist gc in hobe sound, fla., woods’ new club near his Jupiter island home. teacher and pupil spent most of their time working on tiger’s short game, as woods is following doctors’ orders about managing his injuries by limiting his ball count. this was the first time foley worked with woods since tiger’s wd in the players, but they have been communicating on a regular basis. —Tim Rosaforte
