debut forged from 1025 carbon steel, titleist’s new cb
712 irons boast a shallow cavity-muscle design that places
mass behind the impact area for enhanced feel. the club
features a slightly rounder profile from its cb 710 predecessor. minimal offset and a constant blade length also
are hallmarks of the irons, providing a traditional blade
with tour-standard lofts. the irons have been used frequently on the pga tour this season and will be available
in stores nov. 18. price: $1,120 (set of eight, steel shafts).

cleveland 588s, byrd’s driver search, janzen’s bad break
head start some of cleveland
golf’s new forged 588 products debuted in vegas at the Justin timberlake shriners hospital for children
open, including the mb and cb
irons and wedges. the company’s
new mashie fairway woods also
were in the bags of some players,
including woody austin. among
those using the wedges were austin
(who had four in the bag), boo
weekley, kevin stadler and Jeff
overton, who also played the 588
mb irons (5-iron through pw).
changes Jonathan byrd used a
taylormade r11 for the first time in
las vegas. byrd’s taylormade burner
superfast 2.0 broke at the bmw
championship, and he has been
experimenting since. launch-monitor
testing showed the r11 produced
numbers close to his old driver. … carl
pettersson switched golf balls from
nike’s 20xi-x to the 20xi-s model.
pettersson made the change seeking
more spin on his long irons. pettersson also added a prototype nike
method long putter at the timberlake.
battered baggage anyone
who has ever had their clubs lost or
damaged by an airline can sympa-
thize with lee Janzen, who arrived
in las vegas trying to qualify for
the timberlake—only to open his
travel bag and smell some-
thing burning. the
stench was con-
siderable. Jan-
zen’s callaway
clubs appeared
as if they had been
taken to a grinding
wheel (below), while others were
badly bent (including his lob wedge
which he estimated was bent a full
40 degrees). when the two-time
u.s. open champion went to an
airline representative, it was sug-
gested to him he could rent clubs.
luckily for Janzen, calla-
way got him a duplicate
set in time for him to
shoot 66 and qualify. for
the tournament Janzen
shot 71-69 and missed
the cut.
