a couple years ago, who could have predicted ea sports
would be willing to put ross fisher or rocco mediate on
the cover of its tiger woods video game? the company’s version of a high-school yearbook superlative
vote debuted last week on its Facebook page, asking
fans to vote golfers onto the cover—one for north
america and one for europe—through a match-play
style bracket. two golfers will go head-to-head weekly
until the winners are announced oct. 24. thing is, we’re
disappointed in some of the players to choose from.
nothing against fisher or mediate; they’re fine golfers.
but why aren’t lee westwood and martin kaymer in
the european bracket? why are matt kuchar and steve
stricker missing on the u.s. side? all four are inside the
top 10 on the world ranking and worthy of the cover.
of course, it’s doubtful they would keep up with highly
marketable stars such as bubba watson or rickie
fowler on the u.s. side, and luke donald or rory mcilroy (who shared the cover with woods in 2011) on the
european side. our choices to win: watson and mcilroy.
the good news for those who were snubbed: appearing
on the cover of ea sports’ madden nfl franchise has
proven to be a jinx of sorts. —Stephen Hennessey
