of the reasons els decided to play the frys event was that
he wanted to try the new driver in competition.
�secret spheres callaway’s
prototype heX black ball made the
rounds at the frys.com open. according to a brochure shown on golfwrx.
com, the ball (one of two upcoming
offerings from callaway) is a five-piece construction with a dual core
(a softer inner cover and firmer outer
cover designed to drop spin off the tee
and boost it on approach shots) and
dual-mantle layer. the cover features
a redesigned hX pattern. among
those using the ball in california were
ernie els and derek lamely.
�continuing trend the long
and belly putter movement continued
unabated at the frys with 16 longer-than-standard putters used ( 12
percent of the field). among the high
finishers using bellys and broomsticks
were runner-up briny baird (
taylormade rossa corza ghost belly),
els (t- 4, odyssey white hot Xg 1
belly), david hearn (t- 7, odyssey
white hot Xg 7 long), spencer levin
(t- 7, taylormade rossa corza ghost
belly) and brendan steele (t- 7, taylormade rossa corza ghost belly).

… the damp and chilly conditions
in northern california had several
players seeking to add height to
their shots to maximize carry.
one of them was Josh teater, who
added a degree of loft (from 14
to 15 degrees) to his taylormade
burner superfast 2.0 3-wood and
3 degrees to his taylormade res-
cue hybrid (from 18 to 21 degrees).
teater finished t- 7 at the frys
event. … paul casey returned to the
nike method putter (a prototype
of the method 001 model) that
he won with in houston in 2009.
