seniors aren’t traveling the globe to the extent of
their younger counterparts to play tournament golf,
but some of them get around. to wit: tom lehman’s
victory sunday in the mcb tour championship, the
season-ending event on the european seniors tour.
the 52-year-old, who won three times (including
the regions tradition) and captured the schwab
cup and money title on his primary circuit in 2011,
shot 12-under 204 to edge fellow champions tour
player david frost by one stroke at constance belle
mare plage in mauritius. (australian peter fowler
held off barry lane to win the order of merit.) it
was the 29th tournament of the year for lehman,
the heaviest schedule the 1996 british open champion said he has played since his mini-tour days.
it was all the more remarkable given that lehman
limped away from the 2010 season with an arthritic
right knee he was told might have to be replaced
with an artificial joint. but lehman went on a
vigorous holiday ski trip, exercising his upper-leg
muscles, and began working out upon his return.
“before you know it, my knee didn’t hurt anymore,”
lehman said last month. don’t be surprised if
lehman’s 2012 preparation includes another sojourn to the slopes. —Bill Fields
