much of what pro golfers post on twitter quali-fies as inane (no one cares that you just ate an
egg-white omelet). by contrast, what Jason gore,
who missed getting back his pga tour card at last
month’s q school, typed Jan. 8 was more heartfelt:
“Just signed up for @ntrustopen qualifier, but you
have no idea how stoked i’d be to get a sponsors invitation! #myhometown #mymajor.” the
37-year-old was referencing the northern trust
open at riviera cc near los angeles, a must-play
event for someone who grew up in valencia and
went to college at pepperdine. his missive became
a call to arms for many of the 9,000-plus who follow @jasongore59. within 48 hours, they digitally
stuffed the northern trust twitter feed with pleas
for gore to get into the field, retweets even coming from nascar driver kevin harvick and actor don cheadle. by Jan. 12 tournament director
Jerry west abided. “we are pleased to see that
his many fans on twitter agreed he is deserving
of this exemption,” west said. “holy [cow], i feel
like tim tebow,” said gore, who demonstrated the
impact of social media when fueled with meaningful thoughts rather than breakfast menus. gore
has plenty of thank-you’s now to write, but at least
they only have to be 140 characters. —R.H.
