forget about the young guns. mark wilson is finding his
form in the second-half of his 30s. now he just has to figure
out how to extend that success into the second half of the
year. finishing literally in the dark sunday at the wind-inter-rupted humana challenge, the 37-year-old wilson made
a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole on the palmer private
course at pga west to pick up his fifth career win and third
in barely more than a year. wilson thrives at this time of the
year. he won the sony open in hawaii and then the waste
management phoenix open to start 2011. in fact, all of
wilson’s wins have been in the first three months of the year.
“the break in november and december, i clear my mind and
i feel like i am more in my own zone,” he said, adding that
he’ll take a couple two- or three-week breaks to see if he can
carry that feeling deeper into the season. wilson said he
never considered laying up on the par- 5 18th hole, despite
protecting a one-stroke lead over long-hitting robert garrigus. “i really didn’t want to give him the opportunity to make
that putt and tie me,” wilson said about the eight-footer
garrigus had for birdie. he didn’t. now let’s see if wilson can
do that in the summertime. —Ron Sirak (@ronsirak)
