meg mallon is a great example of how difficult it is to
get into the lpga hall of fame. she has 18 tour wins,
including four majors, and is still five points short of
the 27 needed to qualify. but now she can add 2013
u.s. solheim cup captaincy to her glittering résumé.
“it’s my favorite event in golf,” mallon told Golf World
Monday after being selected last week. “i was fortunate
enough to earn my way on the team eight times, and
it always was a motivator for me. i’m not sure i would
have played as well without that carrot out there.” with
the competition at colorado gc still 18 months away,
mallon lists her immediate tasks as getting to know the
venue, deciding on uniforms, putting together her support team and deciding which lpga events to attend
to scout players. “i hope to name at least one assistant
captain in the next couple of months,” she said, but
added that she may wait until 2013 to pick the second.
mallon’s side will look to bounce back from a 15-13 loss
to europe at killeen castle in ireland last september
and add to the overall 8-4 domination of the event.
that’s a big carrot to chase. —R.S.
