debut;golfers are used to titleist’s unmistakable script
and either black or red numbers. but if you see balls with
orange, double-digit numbers they are indeed true titleists—the titleist velocity. the two-piece ball is designed
for those seeking distance and is made from a new core,
that the company says is the fastest of any titleist ball. a
new cover blend boasts a 332-dimple pattern designed to
produce a consistent ball flight. price: $27.

worked on an alignment issue with
his driver (he was setting up open
and needed to get back to square) at
titleist’s test center in oceanside,
calif., prior to the farmers insurance
open. however after that change, his
spin rate dropped under 2,000 rpms.
as such, stanley upped the loft on his
titleist 910d3 driver from 7. 5 degrees
to 8. 5 degrees. the result was a spin
rate in the 2,400-rpm range. stanley
finished second in the farmers field in
driving distance at 314.4 yards.

“never happened to me before, cracking my driver like that. the head just

fowler made his pga tour debut
using cobra irons, and the man in
orange said he doesn’t expect the
adjustment to take long. “the process of being able to make [clubs]
basically exact replicas of what you
were playing has made switching
easier,” fowler said. “they’re able to
nail that down almost identical to
clubs that i was using earlier.” fowler
also put cobra’s new amp driver
and 3-wood in the bag at torrey
pines where he finished t- 13.

en route to wins, chris hodge, the director of golf at river falls plantation
in duncan, s.c., made one (worth
$5,000) at the pga merchandise
show. ping conducted a putting contest in which 213 pga pros attempted to qualify based on a “consistency
score” using the iping putting app.
the finals, however, were pure putting among four contestants, and
hodge—the last player to go—holed
the game-winner for the check.
