bubba’s

it’s not unusual for players to show off their favorite rides at
select pga tour events, be it stuart appleby parking his yellow
lamborghini at the arnold palmer invitational or davis love iii
pulling into tpc sawgrass in his pickup truck painted bumper
to bumper in black primer. but for pure novelty, bubba watson
might beat them all at this week’s waste management phoenix open if he follows through on his promise to drive a certain
iconic 1969 orange dodge charger to tpc scottsdale. two
weeks ago watson bought his dream car, the original general
lee from “the dukes of hazzard” television series. “my name’s
bubba, so ... it was kind of fitting,” watson, 33, said of his affection for the show that ran from 1979-85 and of which he owns
the complete dvd collection. watson paid $110,000 at the
barrett-Jackson automobile auction in scottsdale for the fully
restored “lee 01,” the model that jumps over a police car in the
program’s opening credits. watson promised himself he’d buy
the car after his first tour win in 2010. “it’s not about the confederate flag, it’s about the show,” he explained. “you know how
people collect comic books, baseball cards, basketball cards?
we don’t have that many golf cards. it’s like that.” watson
called his winning bid, “a steal.” what better way to honor luke
and bo duke? —Dave Shedloski (@DaveShedloski)
