a new regime at the usga means a new look
at the long putter, or at least how it is wielded.
mike davis, who took over as the association’s
executive director last year, and glen nager, the
new president as of saturday’s annual meeting in
houston, both say the broomstick is on their radar.
“we’re going to take a fresh look at this and determine what is good for the game for all golfers long-term,” davis said. of a recent meeting between
the usga and r&a, davis said, “we did talk about
various equipment issues, including anchoring.”
that issue—anchoring the hand to the chest—
seems to be of greater concern to the usga than
the length of the putter shaft. nager noted that
there has been “a significant spike in playing habits” involving long putters, with the clubs no longer
used exclusively by desperate players with the
yips but also by successful young guns like webb
simpson, keegan bradley and bill haas (shown).
davis said, “it would be premature to say a change
is coming, but we haven’t ignored it.” all in, that
sounds a lot like anchoring the long putter against
the chest may have only a short time left. or is that
