01lefty’s;memorable;sunday for all its beauty, the front nine of pebble beach golf links can be a scary place when the guys in front of you are making birdies and you have to answer. Jack nicklaus tried to do it to tom watson in the 1982 u.s. open with five straight birdies. davis love iii was eight under in seven holes against phil mickelson in the 2001 at&t. with just three players in front of him—the winless charlie wi and ken duke and a still un- der-construction tiger woods—phil figured he could apply the pressure too. mick- elson won his fourth at&t pebble beach national pro-am when he went out in five under par through six holes, including a birdie from one foot on the fifth and an eagle at the sixth, to leave his playing partner, woods, in the dust. he made two enormous par-saving putts, one from 30 feet on the par- 3 12th and another from 38 feet on the 15th, and posted a nearly picture-perfect 64 for a two-shot win over wi. the victory was the 40th of mickelson’s career, putting the soon-to-be hall of famer a notch ahead of watson and cary middlecoff. startlingly, it was the fifth straight time in the last five years mickelson has beaten woods in a head-to-head fourth-round show- down.—Jim Moriarty (@GWMoriarty)
