a;great;day;for
feng;and;china
anyone thinking the return of golf to the olympics
in 2016 will bring tens of millions of chinese into
the game should probably think again. more likely
is that china will produce not a mass-appeal game
but rather a small number of world-class players, as it has in tennis where li na won the 2011
french open. china had its greatest day in world
golf sunday when it swept the individual, team
and amateur titles in the inaugural world ladies
championship, a ladies european tour event. even
though it was a home game, played on the vintage
course at mission hills haikou on hainan island
in southern china, it was an impressive effort.
lpga member shanshan feng (shown) took the
individual title at 10-under-par 206 for 54 holes
and teamed with liying ye to be the best among
20 national teams. Jing yan, a 16-year-old chinese
national team member born and raised in singapore, took amateur honors by two strokes over
lydia ko, the top-ranked female amateur. don’t
expect to see lines of locals waiting to play courses
in china anytime soon, but don’t be surprised to
see a player from the mainland contending to be
the best player in the world by the time we get to
rio in 2016. —Ron Sirak (@ronsirak)
