09another acc title for georgia tech
“horses for courses” is the common explanation for why an
individual has repeated success at a given layout. but what
about when an entire team, one that cycles through players in
four-year intervals, can’t stop putting up red numbers? after
yesterday’s seven-stroke (27-under 837) triumph over virginia, the georgia tech men have won at least a share of the acc
title six of the past seven years and nine of the last 14, eight
of them claimed at old north state club in new london, n.c.
with a new roster each april—only James white (shown) and
ricky werenski had played the course before last week—the
yellow Jackets’ dominance stands out at a time of parity in college golf; no other marquee conferences can boast a program
that has won more league titles in the same period. talented
players, of course, have much to do with it; anders albertson,
bo andrews, ollie schniederjans and werenski all had top-
10s last weekend. so too does the fact that the georgia tech’s
home venue, gc of georgia, has similar conditions to old
north state (which has been the annual venue since 2002).
given the yellow Jackets’ play of late, conference rivals might
have developed a psychological barrier, a notion other coach-es’ privately struggle to dismiss. if that’s true, georgia tech’s
foes better get over it. old north state hosts accs again in
