seve’s son
makes pro debut
nine days before the one-year anniversary of his
father’s death, Javier ballesteros, the 21-year-old son
of spanish icon seve ballesteros, completed his debut
in a pro event with a t-14 finish in the peugeot alps
de barcelona tournament. the sant cugat course in
catalunya, spain, is the same place seve made his
pro debut 38 years ago. Javier, who says he will finish law school before deciding whether to pursue a
golf career, finished four under par, 12 strokes behind
winner pablo larrazabal. the stop is part of the alps
tour, one of the feeder circuits for the challenge tour,
europe’s version of the nationwide tour. seve died
may 7, 2011 at age 54 after a lengthy battle with brain
cancer. “i come away satisfied,” Javier said yesterday
at sant cugat. “i will gain a lot of confidence from
playing here.” he said that although he will stay in
school, he is open to more sponsor’s invitations. seve
had 91 professional wins worldwide, including five
major championships, and led the european revival
that turned the ryder cup from a biennial rout into
one of the most competitive events in all of sports. in
