trump’s major news: a women’s open in ’ 17
donald trump has wanted a major championship at one of his courses, and now
he has one. the usga announced may 3 that trump national gc in bedminster,
n.J., only a 10-minute drive from the usga’s far hills headquarters, will be the
site of the 2017 u.s. women’s open. “we really get to showcase our museum,
and we get to showcase where we test balls and clubs,” usga executive director
mike davis (above left, with trump and the usga’s thomas J. o’toole Jr.) told
the associated press, speaking of trump national’s location. “far hills is not the
easiest place to find, so to get the golf world for a week here, it’s very exciting and
we will expose the campus.” trump national gc bedminster, whose old course
designed by tom fazio opened in 2004 and new course by tom fazio ii opened in
2008, hosted the 2009 u.s. Junior amateur and girls’ Junior championships. the
usga is leaning toward the old course, designed on rolling former farmland and
horse pastures, as site of the women’s open, but a decision hasn’t been reached.
“we are quite confident that our partners at trump national gc will provide a
course truly worthy of this prestigious championship,” said martha lang, chair-
man of the usga’s women’s committee. —Bill Fields (@BillFields1)
