02mcilroy’s consolation
welcome back, rory. long time, no see. it has been,
what, a whole week—seven long days—since you were
no. 1 in the world? well, climb back on, young fella.
rory mcilroy needed to finish in a two-way tie for seventh or better in order to leapfrog the idle luke donald,
who had leapfrogged the idle mcilroy the week before
in new orleans, and thus reclaim the undisputed title
of world no. 1, which he’ll hold dearly until this week in
ponte vedra beach at the players when the computer
will whirl and grind again and, potentially, spit out
another new no. 1. or maybe not. at any rate, losing in
a three-way playoff in the wells fargo championship
gave mcilroy, who won at the Quail hollow club two
years ago with a dramatic final-round 62, more than
enough points to tilt the computations in his favor. it
was minor comfort. “that’s nice,” said the 23-year-old
irishman. “it’s a little consolation. i would rather win
the tournament. but, yeah, it’s good. you know, i want
to try and play well for the next few weeks and try and
solidify my spot there at no. 1. hopefully, start by doing that next week and giving myself another chance
to win.” —Jim Moriarty (@GWMoriarty)
