d.a. points turned out to be the adult in the room, supervising the three-way playoff between himself and a
couple of 23-year-old wunderkinds, rickie fowler and
rory mcilroy in the wells fargo championship. playing
alongside mcilroy, the 35-year-old points played the
most consistent golf of the three sunday. in fact, points
didn’t make a bogey from his 13th hole on friday afternoon until he played the 72nd hole. he was nine under
par during that stretch, but the bogey 5 he made on
the 18th dropped him into a tie at 14 under and eventually cost him the title, which would have been his second on tour. his only victory came last year when he
partnered with bill murray in the at&t pebble beach
national pro-am. “i lost in a playoff,” said a smiling
points afterward. “i played really well, really all week.
you know, i’ve been in a few playoffs on the nationwide tour, and it’s actually kind of, oh, ok. i was joking
with [pga tour rules official] steve rintoul. i knew i
was not going to finish worse than tied for second, and
i have a great opportunity to win.” —J.M.
