when phil mickelson was inducted into the world golf hall of fame may 7 with dan Jenkins, peter alliss, hollis stacy and sandy lyle, the number of living hall of famers present for the en- shrinement was 14. there were even fewer active players at the ceremony—Jim furyk, keegan bradley and Joe ogilvie among the handful who attended. the lack of support for the hall from its members and potential future members—where, for example, were ernie els and vijay singh that evening?—is pointed out as a major criticism of its most important night, a night that was moved to players week partially to increase participation among the game’s elite. which is why it was encouraging to hear mick- elson say he’ll attend the ceremony in the future. phil gets it. his appearance at the masters honorary-starter ceremony last month was not just for show. having someone of mickelson’s tature on hand when the class of 2013 is immortalized perhaps will inspire more hall of famers and active players to attend. golf’s hall ceremony might never match baseball’s as a celebra- tion of the game, but having mickelson present will be a step in the right direction. —John Antonini (@johnantoninigw) phil’s future hall plans 05
