her name will read “shanshan feng” when it
is engraved on the wegmans lpga championship trophy just below that of her friend,
2011 winner yani tseng, but the 22-year-old
likes to be called Jenny, the “american” name
she was given by a chinese schoolteacher
during an english class when she was 12.
“i think i look like a Jenny,” feng told golf
channel’s kelly tilghman during a post-tour-nament press conference, after she posted
a six-under 282 at locust hill cc outside
rochester, n.y., to become the first player
from mainland china to win an lpga event.
she certainly looks like a winner. feng won
twice on the Japan lpga tour in 2011 and has
already won the ladies european tour and the
Jlpga in 2012. now, in her fifth year in the
u.s., the gary gilchrist student has an lpga
title as well. and it’s one of the most important, the lpga championship being the tour’s
second oldest major. it’s enough to boost her
to fifth on the rolex rankings, putting feng in
world-class company, no matter what you call
her. —John Antonini (@johnantoninigw)
