�gamechanger it wasn’t the longest shot webb
simpson struck during the u.s. open, but it might have
been the most important. faced with a delicate chip
on the 72nd hole at olympic club, simpson used his
58-degree titleist vokey spin milled c-c wedge and
executed a shot that came out of the rough and stopped
four feet from the hole. the ensuing par proved to be
the difference as simpson won by a shot over graeme
mcdowell and michael thompson.

furyk’s driver, bubba’s hybrid, sergio’s ‘light’ touch
�timely tweak Jim furyk
started the week testing a gold-accented udesign callaway raZr
fit (in honor of his favorite football
team, the pittsburgh steelers),
but opted for tweaking his gamer
instead. furyk changed the weights
on his 10.5-degree raZr fit to put
the heavier weight in the heel to
combat tee shots that were “
hanging to the right.” furyk finished t- 4
at the u.s. open.
�set shakeup although he used
a hybrid (mostly a nickent model)
earlier in his career, masters champ
bubba watson has not often employed one since. that made his
adding a 21-degree ping i20 hybrid
for the u.s. open noteworthy. watson also added a ping s59 2-iron,
feeling both clubs would come in
handy off the tee at olympic. watson took his 14-degree 4-wood and
s56 3-iron out of play.

glover, who won the 2009 u.s.
open, appeared to return to the nike
sq sumo2 square driver he used at
bethpage black, but it actually was
a different club. although the same
model, glover’s driver at olympic
was a new: it had a matrix ozik f7
m2 shaft and set up more open than
the one he used in ’09. glover also
had a large superstroke grip put on
his nike method putter. the putter’s
head was the same shape as the one
he used at bethpage.
�changes sergio garcia normally
plays fairway woods with shafts
weighing more than 100 grams, but
he used a new taylormade rock-etballz ( 15 degrees) 3-wood with a
70-gram mitsubishi diamana ’ahina
shaft at the open. … nike techs had to
repair simon dyson’s driver as the airline broke the shaft on his flight to san
francisco. dyson felt the new shaft
felt a little too stiff in the weather conditions at olympic club, so a second
re-shaft was done to make the true
temper project-X 6. 5 a little weaker.
