01waiting game suits leishman
there are a myriad ways of winning, but among the
least stressful for a skillful player attempting to win
for the first time on the pga tour was the one taken
yesterday at the travelers championship by australian marc leishman. the pga tour rookie of the year
in 2009, leishman shot a final-round 62 that did not
even give him the lead, but was close enough that
he was required to hang around. the leader by two
strokes was charley hoffman, who was hitting shots
with such precision that victory seemed imminent,
until that same swing deserted him on the 17th tee.
he hit it into the lake right of the fairway, the start of
a double bogey, which was followed by a bogey at 18,
the result of another wild drive. leishman, meanwhile,
watched patiently from the clubhouse, then casually kept loose on the practice tee and putting green,
while challenges from brian davis, tim clark, bubba
watson and roland thatcher went awry. leishman,
28, won by a stroke, a maiden victory that finally confirmed what his rookie season hinted at, that he was a
player with potential. —John Strege (@JohnStrege)
