duke (and lang)
end long slide
finally, the streak is over. brittany lang yesterday became the first duke player to win an lpga event, ending
a personal 0-for-143 streak. lang, who fought a balky
putter down the stretch, made a four-footer on the third
playoff hole to win the inaugural manulife financial
lpga classic in what started out as a four-way playoff.
chella choi was eliminated when she failed to birdie no.
18 on the first extra hole, and inbee park met the same
fate the next time around. finally, lang closed out hee
kyung seo, the runner-up to so yeon ryu in a playoff at
last year’s u.s. women’s open, with her third consecutive birdie on no. 18. lang had a chance to win it in regulation but missed a four-footer. duke has been a major
program in women’s college golf, winning five ncaa
championships, but it has strangely never won an lpga
event. that stigma exists no longer. now it’s only 90
wins behind furman. —Ron Sirak (@RonSirak)
