a better bubba
Contends at travelers
it is not yet known whether bubba watson found his game at the
travelers championship, but he no longer appears lost, either.
since winning the masters in april, watson had foundered, tying
for 18th at the zurich classic, a tournament he won in 2011, and
missing the cut in both the memorial and the u.s. open. he also
chose to skip the players to spend time with his growing family that now includes an infant son. but yesterday at the travelers championship (another tournament he has won before), he
looked for a time as though he were leading from behind. the most
accomplished player in contention, watson was trailing charley
hoffman, but was closing fast, a birdie at the par- 5 13th putting
him at five under par for the round. he was undone by the drivable par- 4 15th, a hole tailor-made for a player of his strength and
imagination, when he pushed his tee shot wide left and into the
middle of its lake. he still salvaged par, but his momentum had
evaporated. he parred in and tied for second, a shot behind the
winner marc leishman. still, it was a move forward for a player
heretofore in full retreat. —J.S.
